Abstract

Smart buildings have emerged as a key innovation in architecture and civil engineering to enhance energy efficiency and user comfort. Despite the promising potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in optimizing energy consumption, challenges remain in its effective implementation. Existing studies have focused primarily on individual components such as HVAC or lighting, without considering the holistic impact of AI integration in building energy management. This research aims to bridge this gap by evaluating the implementation of AI across multiple building systems and assessing its impact on energy efficiency. A mixed-method approach was adopted, combining literature review, simulation-based experiments, and case study analysis. AI-driven simulations were conducted to compare energy consumption between conventional and AI-optimized systems. Case studies of smart buildings implementing AI were analyzed to validate the findings. The results indicate that AI integration in HVAC systems reduces energy consumption by 27%, AI-controlled lighting achieves 35% energy savings, and AI-based energy management systems improve efficiency by 30%. Overall, AI implementation results in an average energy efficiency improvement of 28%. This study contributes to the field by providing a comprehensive analysis of AI’s role in smart buildings, identifying practical challenges, and proposing strategies for effective AI adoption. The findings offer valuable insights for architects, engineers, and policymakers in optimizing AI-driven energy management in sustainable building design.
