Abstract

Structural health monitoring of high-rise buildings is essential for ensuring safety and operational reliability, particularly in areas exposed to seismic and environmental loads. However, conventional inspection methods are limited by periodic assessments and their inability to provide continuous condition information. This study aims to develop and evaluate an integrated Internet of Things (IoT) and Digital Twin system for real-time monitoring of structural health in multi-story buildings. An experimental approach was conducted using a 15-story office building model equipped with strain, vibration, displacement, and inclination sensors connected to a BIM-based Digital Twin platform. The results showed communication latencies of 8–25 ms, data loss rates of 0.00–0.12%, system availability of 99.88%, and model validation deviations ranging from 2.35% to 6.94% compared to sensor measurements. The developed system successfully classified structural conditions into normal, warning, and danger levels and detected potential hazards within less than 1.5 s. Furthermore, annual maintenance costs were reduced by 70.8% compared to conventional inspection approaches. The explicit novelty of this study lies in the integration of real-time IoT sensor data with a BIM-based Digital Twin through a multi-parameter threshold alert mechanism that dynamically visualizes structural conditions and supports automated decision-making. These findings demonstrate that the proposed framework can improve the accuracy, responsiveness, and efficiency of structural health monitoring for modern high-rise buildings.
