Transforming Urban Architectural Identity: Historical Evolution and Contemporary Adaptation for Sustainable Development

he transformation of urban architectural identity has become a critical issue in response to the dynamic development of cities influenced by social, economic, and technological changes. However, existing studies tend to be fragmented and have not comprehensively integrated historical aspects, preservation, sustainability, and digital transformation. This study aims to analyze the patterns of urban architectural identity transformation and to develop an integrative conceptual framework. The research employs a comprehensive literature review method, followed by thematic analysis to identify patterns and relationships among concept. The findings reveal that the transformation of architectural identity is influenced by four main dimensions: historical evolution as the foundation, preservation and adaptive reuse as transitional mechanisms, sustainability as the direction of transformation, and digital technology as an accelerator of innovation. The results also indicate that preservation approaches still dominate existing studies, while the integration of sustainability and digital aspects remains limited. The main contribution of this research lies in developing a conceptual model that integrates these four dimensions into a comprehensive analytical framework, providing a more holistic understanding of the transformation of urban architectural identity and offering a foundation for future research and design practices.
